The
suite of GUI tools Apple provides (WGM, SA, etc.) cover a wide
variety of
functions, but they can't be made to do everything. They are also
limited
in what changes they can make (e.g. there are things you can do w/
DNS by
editing the files by hand that you could never do in SA).
Unfortunately there will always be people who would rather use the GUI
"multitool" they are familiar with than learn a "specialty tool".
Personally I use Server Admin as much as I can, but I recognize it has
limitations.
There is some truth in this.
But there is also a great deal of work that *could* go into making SA
so much more an outstanding toolset --- lightyears ahead of what it is.
Take DNS. Is CLI the only way to get DNS to work beyond the basics
in OS X? That's not what Men&Mice had to say about it. Their tool
is the BEST available, pretty much on any platform. GUi, it is. GUI
it has been since, well, I was using it in 8.6, but I was a late-
comer to the hosting game. Apple doesn't come close to this
functionality. I'd like to see a functionality in DNS that has to be
done via CLI that isn't already part of the M&M Suite. It may be in
there, but I'd like some intelligent soul to define it.
There is PLENTY of room for improvement and expansion for Apple's SA
interface.
They can clean up what remains broken in the existing interface.
They can expand upon the meager but arguably important avenues for
managing ClamAV and SpamAssassin.
And if we let Apple rest on their laurels with what we have at
10.4.7, then we do a disservice to the vendor. If they want to
innovate -- there is plenty of room. Let's support those here, even
if they lack the language to express their needs on first try, who
would push Apple beyond this modest beginning of an admin toolset.
It 'can't be made to do everything' seems an invitation to ask: why not?
