Are you sure you're not actually encountering a DNS issue? Can you hit your
mail server by IP? If you can't access via IP or DNS then I'd take a look
at the authentication you're using. We've seen issues with how secure
protocols react to having their packets encapsulated by L2TP. Then the
question would become do the issues persist with PPTP. This doesn't mean
you need to switch to a different VPN protocol but rather that you are
isolating whether it is an issue with the VPN protocol conflicting with your
mail authentication protocol. Once you've isolated that then you will
better be equipped to troubleshoot the issue in L2TP.
