I am trying to install Mac OS 10.4.0 server on a brand new Power
Mac Quad. I quickly discovered that both the DVD and CD (and
another 10.4 DVD we had) causes the machine to crash shortly after
the Apple logo appears on startup. I performed an extended hardware
test where everything passed. An Apple engineer explained to me
that I need 10.4.2 Server or later to install on this hardware. Go
figure. I just purchased this OS X Server direct from Apple, you
would think I would get a more recent build.
My question is: While I wait for Apple to get me a more recent
build, would either remote install or target mode allow me to
install 10.4.0 and then update to 10.4.7 ?
Thanks for any tips.

The short answer: Search the list archive, it´s in there.
The somewhat longer answer: Search Apple k-base at http://
www.apple.com/support/
The even longer answer:
As usual Apple hardware will work with the version shipped with the
computer or later but not with any previous version of Mac OS X. This
means you cannot boot your brand new Power Mac Quad on any Mac OS X
install DVD with a version older than the one you have on the
original DVD. My guess is that the Power Mac Quad was delivered with
10.4.5, which means you cannot boot it with anything older than
10.4.5. To solve the problem read the k-base article http://
docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107496 replacing 10.2 with
10.4 and Power Mac G4 with Power Mac G5.
