I always interpret the "F" in RTFM as shorthand for "you should have
known this, you didn't do your due diligence." I strive to not to
get told that in my posts to lists such as this. I would not regard
being told that as impolite (at least, as long as it was a fair
criticism).
[big snip]
Well, I've always read RTFM as Read The Fine Manual. To me it means
that I should actually look thru the documentation (again!), because
it does contain the solution or at least valuable info on how to
tackle the issue. Sometimes it might mean the other F, but I don't
care because:
From even the most terse RTFM you get a lot of information:
- Your issue is known (you are not the only one on the planet seeing it)
- Vital aspects of your issue are known to the one replying with RTFM
and in his/her eyes it shouldn't be too hard to find the solution
- Go do read the documentation or look for what makes up the whole
documentation, you missed something. E.g. the Getting Started is not
all there is for Mac OS X Server, there are a lot more pdfs to be
read which are much more detailed and dedicated to certain areas.
- You have probably been vamping (see: http://www.slash7.com/pages/
vampires).
All in all it says: You have the info at your fingertips, go look it
up, while doing your homework also learn the rules, but please come
back when you really need help!
