Re: Multicast ASR

bombich does have some good resources-- i've used them as my starting point-- but now i want to optimize my set up.

in his NetRestore docs, bombich says a good 10/100Mb network can handle a "Data Rate" (DR) config of 15,000,000, however on my closed (private internal) network i struggle with anything more than 10,000,000. that is unless i set the "Client Data Rate" (CDR) config to any number (and it doesn't seem to matter what that number is). with the CDR set, the asr server seems to chug along at whatever rate it feels comfortable at. as an example, i get the same restore times if the DR is set to 12000000 and the CDR is set to 10000000 as when DR is set to 10000000 and the CDR is set to 6000000. also, when i watch the network bandwidth graph in Server Admin, i notice big spikes and drops in data rate when the CDR is set. without the CDR set the server keeps a nice even flow of data. is this because the clients are "telling" the server to slow down when the CDR is set (though it seems the CDR setting has no precise effect on that lower limit)?

also, bombich talks about using compressed disk images with faster machines to cut restore times in half. i'm only restoring MBPs and iMac Core Duos so i've been using compressed images from the start. i'm wondering if anyone's tried different types of compression and had more or less success?

I'm looking for some best practices when implementing Multcast
ASR. What kind of configurations should i use, including client
data rate, server data rate, multicast address, etc.

i'm currently running Multicast ASR on a 10/100 internal
192.168.x.x network via an Asante switch, so i pretty much have
full control over the setup. i'm using Netboot and Netrestore to
do the ASRing, but have found it really difficult to get bandwidth
that's both fast and reliable (i.e. little packet loss).

i've got a 10GB image and am doing anywhere from 3-20 machines per
week (8-10 max multicast asr at any one time). right now it takes
about 35-40 mins to image one or many machines. i'd like to cut
that down to < 30mins.

I hate getting the following answer, but "it depends". It depends on your network infrastructure.

Also remember that Bombich has some good resources on this.

Also if you are using something like multicast Ghost for the PCs you can
ask those guys what settings they use as a good starting point.
