changing xserve ip address and network config

I am going to be moving my dual G5 xserves running 10.3.9 to a new facility in the near future. I've been researching the proper way to change the ip addresses and network config settings and have come up with the following information:

1. I have to use the "changeip" command line utility to update the ip address for each nic
2. I then have to hook a console up to each xserve, login to the GUI, access network prefs and update again from there...?

Has anyone else done this on a headless xserve? Is it true you have to go in to the GUI after running "changeip" to fully change the network config for the nics?

Any advice is appreciated,
Eben
