For me, the incredulous moment was discovering that although the
iCal server
provides group calendars, group members can't edit them using iCal

That would indeed be a deal breaker if it were true.

iCal --> Preferences --> Accounts --> Server Settings --> Account URL:
http://<your domain here>:8080/principals/groups/<your group here>

will allow group members to edit a group calendar.

Correcting the typo above (port 8008 instead of 8080)...

Oops! My bad.

So the docs never actually state that you can edit a group calendar without
using the web interface, but they certainly don't suggest any other method.
Perhaps its because...

It gets worse. In Web Technologies Admin manual, page 38, it says "WARNING: Do not try to access the server through the direct ports." Although I believe it's referring to the wiki engine here, it does give pause...

However, I have discovered no ill effects with a total of 13 calendars being shared, multi-edit, with four people.

A few strange things happen, like if you list someone in the group as an attendee, that person gets mail with a link, which when clicked, adds that calendar item to THEIR calendar, regardless of whether they are on the shared calendar or not. In our case, all four people share their calendars, and if all four of them accept the invitation, the same event appears on everyone's iCal FOUR TIMES! So the attendee invite mechanism seems to be broken in this case.

But it is devilishly fun to add To Do items to other people's shared calendars... :-)
