UPS classifications and a Wiki to share independent data?

Hello all,

I've been digging this mailing list to grok for what people have said in the recent year or so about experiences with Universal Power Supply (UPS) and Mac OS X Server generally.

I've seen mention of brands such as MGE, APC, Belkin, Liebart and Powerware but what surprises me is that no one has classified the types of UPSs they are either using or are considering to buy. And I can't help but wonder if the class makes a big difference (even "small" UPSs for use with a single Xserve or Mac tower). What we have ended up with is a mishmash of people using UPSs but not having any good scientifically sound data (based on well formed hypotheses).

For example, I saw some people complaining on the mailing list about a particular brand and type of UPS within that brand failing them (rebooting their machine running Mac OS X Server, not communicating appropriately over the USB port, etc.). I couldn't help but wonder if the lack of understanding the class of UPS (regardless of brand) might have saved them some pain?

For example, there are generally three classes that I'm aware of (please correct me if my eyesight hasn't seen other classes) that would generally apply to the niche community of administrators running Mac OS X Server (sorry for the chippy bullet points below, this isn't an attempt to be a Powerpoint slide):

* Offline (Standby)
* Line Interactive
* Online

Would it not be of interest to the niche community of Mac OS X Server systems administrators to join together and start collecting some really useful data about the classes of UPSs they are using and their relative performance as well as specific performances of brands and devices within those classes? I'm wondering if a Wiki would be appropriate? Since Apple is touting as a "sneak peak" a new Wiki Server in Mac OS X Server 10.5 "Leopard", it would seem to be good logic to utilize Apple's own Wiki Server to start a Wiki to start collecting information (I think such an endeavor should, in the same vein as Wikipedia, be independent from Apple to remove potential bias) < http://www.apple.com/server/macosx/leopard/wikiserver.html >

Is there interest here in the small community in sharing and collecting information about UPSs?

Best regards,

Serg
