10.4.8 clients failing afp login on 10.4.7 servers

We've recently started reimaging classroom Macs with 10.4.8 while keeping the servers at 10.4.7. Nothing has apparently changed in the settings for directory services on the clients from their 10.4.7 configurations, however we're starting to see consistent authentication failures "...afp or smb network - contact your network administrator" with afp -5000 errors. Mobile home users all, on independent OD servers, with unique, matched user configs (shortname, UID, home server actual location, etc.) for those users in multiple buildings experiencing this.

Question: could this be an issue that bumping the servers to 10.4.8 may correct?
