When monitoring the AFP connections, some of the local machines show their connection address as 10.0.1.x and others as "broadcasthost." What does the latter mean? Why the difference? All machines get their local IP address from the DHCP server running in the WAN modem.

Did you check that that's where they're getting their IP addresses from, or is that just the way you set them up to work ?

'broadcasthost' in your situation probably means 255.255.255.255. In other words, the computers are trying to do local networking over something like Bonjour.

One one computer of each type, bring up the 'Network' System Preferences screen and check the 'Built-In Ethernet' 'TCP/IP' settings. See if they look the same. Once you've done that, start up 'Terminal' on those computers and see if they have similar command- line prompts.
