We have a Mac OS X server with two hard-drives. When
it was first set up, software raid was not
implemented. However, we would like to have it
implemented now. We have received conflicting
information from Apple support about how to do this,
or even if we can without reinstalling the whole
operating system. So, my question is, can we turn on
software raid on this sever without reinstalling? If
so, can anyone point me to some reliable documentation
about how to do this?
I did have success doing this in the past - and made up a quick
little pdf with instructions that really only require one reboot of
the server during the process. the pdf can be found here:
i am not at a place where i can edit the pdf right now, but the only
thing i could see a problem with right now is in the rsync command i
didnt tell it to preserve the extended attributes - (adding a -E to
the command should work) -- and i had not used ACL's one bit at this
point either, so those are not preserved. A diskutil block-copy
clone should do the trick though.
rsync is a disastrous way to do this unless you know exactly what
metadata you're prepared to sacrifice to get rsync to work
effectively.
Then again, maybe that's just my opinion.
