open directory master upgrade - best way

Hey all,
We're are upgrading our poor old dual G4 xserves with a new xeon xserves.  We've got 9 I think to do.  The one that worries me is the open directory master.  From googling about, whats the best way do do this without losing passwords and reconfiguring all the clients directory sevices ldap info.
The idea I had to make this happen was to
1 -promote an existing replica to master
2 - turn off the master
3 - put new hardware in place using same ip and dns name as old master
4 - make the new server a replica of the master that was just upgraded
5. promote the new xserve to the master

Would that work (authenticate, keep kerberos happy),  and save us reconfiguring all the client machines in all the schools (several thousand in several locations).   Is there a better way?  Can we just use the open directory archive backup and apply that to a server in place?
Thanks
P
