I need a solid backup solution recommendation for OSX server. Because
I deal with a lot with images some of my files store 50+ GIGs that I
need to archive permanently each week. SO here is the spec.
I need a solution that includes:
1. Software backup application (no scripted or rysnc/ditto solutions)
2. LTO drive 200G+
I use BRU Server. It's easy to set up and in native to Intel (and PPC)
and can back up unix, mac, and windows clients. In contrast, I don't
think Retrospect will be supporting OS X much longer (there isn't an
Intel-native version).
3. SCSI controller
If it weren't for the fact that most tape-drives are scsi-only, I
would recommend against using scsi for OS X since apple is withdrawing
support for that interface. There are a few firewire solutions, mostly
for small-capacity drives.
BRU Server works well for the most part and has some really nice
features, but it's still lacking. Both the GUI and terminal-interface
are buggy and awkward to use. Just last week I accidentally canceled a
7+-hour tape-backup by "monitoring" the job and pressing ctrl-c
(trying to quit the terminal app)... the manual said nothing of that
"feature". However, the server itself runs independently of the
interface and appears to be very stable. Oh, and they recently
abolished their user-forums so you either have to ask for help within
30 days of purchase or buy a subscription to their technical support.
This is my first real experience with backups, however. I don't know
whether such a crappy interface is good or bad compared to the
competition.
