Hi, I am trying to create an entry in the System Preferences/Sharing
panel for a database server.  I have set the database up in the ~/

correctly - all good.

WHat I really want is to create an entry in the above mentioned
preferences panel so that I can easily start and stop the service.

I don't think Apple has opened that to manipulation. I don't recall ever seeing anything 3rd party in there. You might have to create your own PrefPane to start the service. However, you can add entries to the firewall portion of Sharing by modifying /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist.
