I don't understand why you think this is the wrong place ?

This panel contains items such as Web Sharing, File Sharing, Print Sharing, etc. Why are these any different from Database Sharing ?

Why would it be the right place?

It's not your pane, it's Apple's.

And then there's the huge issue of why a database would be in a sharing pane at all...

And please, please, please:

Sorry - noobie here...

Why would it be the right place ? simply because they appear to have done most of the hard work already, all I would be doing is adding another item to an existing panel. Seems unnecessary to create a whole new panel - most other OSes have tried to standardise how things like this get done to make it easier for the user.

It's not your pane, it's Apple's.
/Library/StartupItems is something Apple created for us to put items in - I mistakenly thought the Sharing Panel was provided by Apple to allow us to add other items - perhaps I want to set up my own J2EE app server and share an application !!! Would'nt it make sense to be able to start or stop the service in this Panel, same as the web server or the file server ?

And then there's the huge issue of why a database would be in a sharing pane at all...
Because I want to share access to the database !
