And if Apple was aware of this, why did they not include a check to see
whether Tiger was about to try (inevitably fatally) to rebuild a Panther
RAIDset, and then warn the user that the result would be unrecoverable
before making it so?

The internals of software RAID volumes do not lend themselves to make determinations that a corrupted or degraded RAID volume is "broken" or of the old flavor.

In fairness to both my original correspondent, and Christopher, I do not
think that the docs have any warning that this would happen. If anyone can
find a KB article or anything else that does warn of it, then I would be
very grateful to know of it.

The process for preparing a system installation for Tiger relies heavily on the Worksheet which if stepwise used and you wish a RAID 1 device is highly suggestive that the disk be erased (that is to follow the steps it would be the next thing you'd do.) It doesn't say you must -- and as the poster found out you don't *have to* -- but it relatively follows and is implied if you follow things stepwise.

Additionally the Migration Guide has a whole section on "Understanding What Can Be Re-USed" and it doesn't mention reusing and RAID volumes, therefore it's implied you don't want to. It mentions re-using settings, but granted doesn't by any long stretch jump out and say best practice for how this is done.

I also don't believe that remote installs or upgrades permit this, but it's been a while since I'd have tried so I remember for sure and don't want to Scooter Libby.
