You can't add to it - .prefpane bundles are self-contained entities, and the
source code/resources aren't open. "Adding another item to the list" is
_exactly_ "modify[ing] the behaviour of their panel." Accept it, write your
own preference pane as Dan and Andre have already suggested and move along.
These aren't the droids you're looking for.
Without entering into a debate about whether this method is either a good or
a great way to manage third-party services on OS X, it has been done by many
people over a long period of time on OS X and is the accepted way of
managing those "other items". I currently have 3 different preference panes
installed for managing third-party network services on my two primary boxen.
Potentially inelegant - maybe. But the sooner you accept the reality that
the built-in Apple prefpane isn't the solution to your problem, the sooner
you'll be solving your *actual* problem.
