Re: How to create a Preferences/Sharing entry for my database server ?

The way I see it the items in the Sharing Preferences panel are the oranges and the Panel is the basket. A database server would be much the same level as a web server or a file server - that is simply another item(orange) in the list. It would be sensible and user friendly to simply add another item(orange) rather than create a whole new panel(basket) for one item(orange) - or in my case perhaps its an apple so therefor it needs its own basket, special case these apples are<grin>.

I am also pretty sure it would be possible to add another item to this panel with no code changes to the panel. Its probably simply a matter of adding another entry somewhere - much the same as adding another item to the /Library/StartupItems folder.

Below is a good article describing the problem - the author seems to think this is something Microsoft solved some time ago. Most Linux and Solaris have a similar capability and they certainly don't expect you to go off and create your own way of doing things, they provide a specification for how to add an item to their 'basket'.

Or to follow your fruit theme, pref panes are "oranges". You are asking
about modifying the "orange", and you've been told it is better* to add
another "orange" to the "basket" (System Prefererences).

* "better" in this case could mean "Apple-approved", "less work", "less
prone to breakage", etc.
