I am also pretty sure it would be possible to add another item to this panel with no code changes to the panel. Its probably simply a matter of adding another entry somewhere - much the same as adding another item to the /Library/StartupItems folder.
Below is a good article describing the problem - the author seems to think this is something Microsoft solved some time ago. Most Linux and Solaris have a similar capability and they certainly don't expect you to go off and create your own way of doing things, they provide a specification for how to add an item to their 'basket'.
In any event I don't mean to be controversial, I am just used to working in environments where the vendor provides the basket and you simply add the fruit !! in this case it seems the basket is only for apples... sigh.
You've had it explained to you politely, by many different people, that you've incorrectly fixated on Apple's Sharing control panel.
A solution that works, works well, and is used by everyone else, already exists. You could just as easily bemoan the "lack" of chkdsk in Mac OS X: it's a non-sequitur, or at least based on false or misguided assumptions. |
