Is there a simple method to make the workstations reliably find the
local
server without making a request to the central DNS servers?
This is a good time to setup your own DNS servers. Read the O'reilly
Bind & DNS book before trying this. You can download and install Bind
9.x from ISC.org with no problems. Here is a HOWTO I wrote for
installing Bind 9.x under Mac OS X.
