Re: VPN 1 IP

I have an xserve that only has 1 ip in a data center, additionally I have dhcp access to the internet through my local cable company. I have another company that I do work for and they have just installed a firewall, since my ip changes periodically it can be an issue. So I figured I could setup a vpn connection to my xserve and then connect to the other company through the xserve. Only problem is I can't get routing through the server. I setup the vpn pptp on the xserve to issue me a private IP address 10.1.1.2 now how do I get it to route the traffic out its ethernet port? I haven't been able to figure it out, any ideas?

Since the traffic from the VPN at that point looks like it is local to your Xserve, there are a couple of things you need to do to make it route out. First, you should enable the NAT service in address translation mode. This will configure the server so that any traffic coming from the private IP network being used for the VPN will be sent out to the Internet. In order for the NAT service to function properly, you must also enable the Firewall service.

You also have to configure the client so that it is using the Xserve as its default route. To do this, you should configure the routing information sent out by the VPN service using Server Admin. At that point all traffic bound for anywhere but your client's link local network will pass through the Xserve, including traffic destined for the other company. If you'd prefer traffic solely destined for the other company to pass through the Xserve, but not traffic bound for the Internet at large, you can add a specific route entry for the client in the VPN server's configuration instead of using the Xserve as the default route.
