SSL certificate import failure

I'm renewing an SSL certificate. I get this error when I try to import:

servermgrd: servermgr_info: [42] [CertificateManager importIdentity:] Error importing private key: SecKeychainItemImport (err = -25257)

I had followed the instructions in TechNote 304808 (How to renew a signed certificate that has not expired) and exported the private and public keys related to the existing certificate. I had already obtained the new certificate so I skipped the parts relating to creating a Certificate Signing Request.

Now, I've deleted the old certificate, saved changes, but now I cannot import the new certificate. I Googled the error and received two hits but they didn't seem helpful for my situation. Any ideas?
