Ok, checked in Hex utility -- they were just spaces.

But, on another test of the firewall -- no more connection problems. Very strange.

I'm sure it was the firewall causing the problem previously, as turning it off allowed connections, and turning it back on killed them -- yesterday anyway (with no rule changes between then and now).

Turn on logging of denied packets to determine which rule is being hit.
