Thread-topic: Altirus for Mac Inventory and Application Deployment?
We use the Altiris aclient on all our macs. We simply use the scripting side of it. We wrote 1 script that will bless the boot drive to the netboot server and reboot the machine. After the machine comes up, the job wil run any additional script such as apply any needed updates from our mac update server. Another script(s) will copy a software package to a machine and install it using Apple packages and the comand line installer or scripted install in the package (Adobe products). If we can do it through the command line, we can do it through Altiris.

I can't speak for everyone, but I do believe the Altiris client is rather limited in it's abilities for OSX. We use Altiris on the Windows side here, but after reading the information on what it can do, we decided to go with a much better solution...LANrev. It is cross platform as well and is a server/client based product that gives you a lot of functionality of ARD and Altiris wrapped up into one. I am currently installing it in the background (I had remote login for our built in admin account on in the image for just this purpose) on 6000 machines. After scanning the network for a full day, I have caught about 1400 machines. The computer tracking feature is golden for us. If a machine is stolen, I can enable the tracking feature and have DNS, Screenshots and Cam shots (from the built in cam) send back to our server. That information can then be handed to police to help build a case.

I am using NetBoot/NetRestore for my image deployment. I use ARD for
most of my remote management (VNC), packages, and simple fixes. I use
SSH for other remote admin stuff like traces, log analysis, and low
level BSD stuff. I use OD/MCX for my bigger policy stuff.
My IT manager is happy with my decisions regarding ARD, NetBoot, etc,
but he wants to use our existing Altiris server for application
deployment and asset management. It has been used in the past for
Windows only services. I don't know anything about Altiris, and wonder
if it will do a comparable job to other vendors such as JAMF's Casper
Suite, etc.
The good news is that my Desktop Techs are experienced with Altirus
(for Windows). The bad news is that Im not experienced with Altirus.
Our Desktop Techs are new to Mac OS X too.
Is anyone having good luck with Altiris for asset management/inventory
and application/patch deployment?
Thanks
