I would definitely start with looking at SpamAssassin and ClamAV as
the cause of your slowdowns. We had the same issue, and resolved it by
throwing a Barracuda in front of the mail server to do the spam/virus
filtering.

Yes, we are running Spamassasin and ClamAV on the same box.
We do have quite a few Shared folders.
We have moved webmail to another box (Horde) this is not used very
much.
We have converted all of the db files to skiplist. (this was done so
we could migrate from a G5 Xserve to Intel and for speed increase).

using top in the terminal. Just leave a terminal window open and
run top in it. When you start having the massive slowdown, look

Especially since most of the pages you'd be dealing with wouldn't
get paged out through the page files anyway.
You're probably right. I assumed some other things. I should have
added that the free mem will be close to 0 and the pageout number
will be increasing quickly.
