I've also changed the default socket for mysqli to /var/mysql/ mysql.sock.
Phpinfo shows all the changes, but it still doesn't work...

Where are you making the php call (the one that throws the errors) from? web or command line? How are you turning on MySQL? (through the MySQL Manager.app?)
