Good question. I had forgotten if I had or not, but after double checking,
indeed the volume is listed in the privacy field in System Preferences.

Some more information. I think I have isolated a file that when accessed
causes this behavior. While monitoring an rsync job in verbose mode, I made
note of the last file accessed when the volume forcibly unmounted (LUN went
offline). It is a >3GB QuickTime mov. After a reboot, I selected the file in
Finder and it appeared to thumbnail as expected. When attempting to open it
with QuickTime Player, the LUN went offline and the volume forcibly
unmounted. After that, the only way to get the LUN to come back up was to
replace the RAID controller.

So maybe the controller was choking on this file?

I will do more testing, but I'm curious as to the correlation.

Thanks,
