I want to limit the # of IMAP connections a single user can have to my server. I am noticing at a minimum of 2 connections, some 3 or even 4 imap connections.

Most users are using Mac OS X 10.4 email client. I was hoping to take a bit of a load off of the server by eliminating some of these duplicate connections and in turn fixing my issue with my mail queue locking up.

Any ideas?
Well since mail queues are related to postfix and not cyrus (which handles IMAP) I smell woolly thinking.

I'f you're having lmtp issues then you most likely have some localized network issue.

Actually, we've identified a bug in Leopard's mail server where lmtpd will occasionally stall out and launchd will stop being able to spawn new instances of it. AppleCare Enterprise support has confirmed it as a bug, and it's being worked on. We've got a workaround in place at our institution which checks for messages in the mail queue, checks how many lmtpd processes are running, and if there are none, it kickstarts the cyrus master process and does a 'postqueue -f' which gets things running again (it has the unfortunate side effect of also resetting all current IMAP connections, but c'est la vie).
