Just to add some more data.

If you're interested in going in on the cheap, I've been using m0n0wall with great success for a couple of years now at multiple locations. Mac, Linux and Windows alike are able to connect using PPTP without a lot of muss and fuss.

These devices serve to create VPN tunnels between static locations with PPTP clients connecting seamlessly. One caveat being that once the clients are connected the granularity you have with the rules you can apply to them are limited, so make sure they're trusted users if you're going to go this route.

My previous experiences were with Netscreens Cisco PIXes and WatchGuards. The best of that bunch being the Netscreens (which I think are extinct now) and the worst by far being the WatchGuards for performance and stability.
