This is covered in the kill man page.

kill sends signals to processes. HangUP and TERMinate and KILL are common.
I'm familiar with kill and hup, I haven't used terminate.

There is no lookupd anymore. What version of OS X are you running?

More importantly what is it that you are trying to do?


I have a very busy server that i want to tail my system.log and watch for Directory service Virtual memory growth. when the open refernces reaches a certain number restart directory services.


Nov 30 07:53:36 imap1 DirectoryService[61]: Potential VM growth in DirectoryService since client PID: 0, has 550 open references when the warning limit is 500.

If i allow this to go unchecked , Directory Services dies and I have to reboot the system.
