Re: Q about SoftRAID 3 & splitting mirrors as part of a backup strategy

Apple's software RAID solution does allow you to split a mirror. See
Apple's docs or check out this article for a quick intro to AppleRAID 2:

Doh! I was going by what the SoftRAID website said about Apple's RAID: http://www.softraid.com/vsapple.html .

1) When a mirror is split, are both halves mountable and, if so,
what are their volume names?

Yes, they are mountable. Actually, SoftRAID gives you a few options for how
the split mirror will work, e.g. non-RAID or a read-only secondary volume.

2) Is there a command-line tool for splitting the mirror, so that it
can be used in a script like I envision for my pre- and post-backup
script?

I'm not sure. Check with the SoftRAID guys for more info.

If anything does something similar to what I would like to do, could you please let me know if it is a workable idea? Thanks.

What you're describing is a really common use of RAID 1. I recommend
testing your plan using Apple's RAID 2 and a demo copy of SoftRAID to see
which you like better. You should be able to test either solution on a
regular MOSX client machine if you don't have a MOSXS test machine
available. I imagine you'll find Apple's solution to be more easily
scripted.

Thanks. I am RTFM-ing the diskutil man page right now. If it seems to do the job, I won't bother with SoftRAID.
