FYI this was demo'd at WWDC and here is an article about it .
One of the questions that came up during the demo was why they
didn’t show Mac OS X Server running as a virtual machine.
"Would it be technically possible? Yes," said Rudolph. "Will Apple
permit it right now, no. Apple requires you to run the operating
system on physical Apple hardware. Apple has been a great partner
to us and we don’t want to jeopardize that relationship. We are not
going to take that good will and immediately turn around and spit
in their eye."
This is BS.
Since it was told to me in private conversation I'm not going to name
drop, but two Apple vice presidents said that Apple is completely
fine with virtualization of Mac OS X or Mac OS X Server as long as it
is on Apple hardware (and is properly licensed).
However, Parallels and VMware both claim that Apple won't allow it.
Ben Rudolph never responded to me when I relayed this exact
information to him and asked about the discrepancy. Parallels and
VMware say they'd love to make this happen, if only Apple would allow
it. I'd love to get all of these people in the same room and see
who's telling the truth, or at least get the situation resolved.
I also asked Apple Legal and Apple's copyright folks multiple times
whether the clause in the license agreement prohibitied
virtualization. No answer, of course.
