Do you understand the significance?

A service, possibly mail, but probably something else, is misconfigured? Don't hold out on me, this is one of the reasons I posted to the list.

, and since my externally hosted email address gets root's mail, I'm just getting the bounce notice.

The mail service is not running.

Hence the problem.

Starting mail with the Server Admin gui doesn't change this. In the gui I've given "System Administrator" and "Admin" valid email addresses, and set up mail to forward to the ISP's SMTP server. Still I only get the bounces. The problem seems to be that I am unable to tell the system where to forward root's mail. Or perhaps this mail should be going to some other entity. But since the service is sending to < > ...

You've got mail on your system that's asking for local delivery. Hence since lmtp isn't running, you get the messages.

How do I fix the mailing issue? And is it possible that the mail issue is the cause of the error?

Stop sending mail.

I'd love to. But I can't find the service that is sending it. Again, that is why I'm posting to the list.
