And more info - since I had two volumes on the raid5 system I copied a big
chunk between them and got over 30MB/s. So the raid5 system is not the
problem.

I also turned off and rebooted the G5 Xserver in target mode as it had been
in target mode for over a day. No reconnecting there was no improvement.

So I don't have to reformat the raid5 system itself - there's a problem
related or dependent on firewire somehow....
