Some may writing server utilities in script could be considered Rube
Goldbergian as compared to writing them in C or another real
programming environment.

Shell and the like *are* real languages.

OK, then a very high percentage of OS X should be considered "Rube Goldbergian". If one were to systematically remove such offending 
scripts from OS X, it could not even begin to boot. Even once booted, a significant amount of the OS critically depends on scripts.





The approach to using is cron is admittedly old. But wasn't cron
developed for AT&T UNIX System V? I first saw it on the PDP-11 just
about 30 years ago.

The age of the approach is immaterial. It's the design of the approach.

1. cron however old has certainly survived the test of time.

2. Just like fine wine, cron has defiantly improved over time. f I had a penny for every set of eyes that has critically examined cron since
its inception I'd be very rich individual.
