I don't believe virtual memory is your problem. 6GB of RAM is not a bad idea
anyway, so don't worry that that was unnecessary. MS Office simply does not
play nice with network user homes. If you haven't yet, remove the DoFonts
app from the MS Office directory and remove the MD fonts form the ~/Library
folders.  You may also consider checking out NHR

or working out your own scripts to do something similar.
