I'm transitioning to Leopard Server from Solaris and have noticed that Apple Mail is a complete and total memory hog.

Okay, are you talking about the mail server that's part of Leopard Server, or are you talking about Apple Mail, the client software that comes with Leopard Server ?

If the latter, is this the first time you've used Apple Mail for that account ? If so, it has to go through a lengthy import process which involves indexing all your back mail. This takes ages and chews up memory. Worse still, it can't do this indexing until Spotlight has finished its indexing, so it just hangs around until it can start.

Is it set to access your account(s) via IMAP or POP ?

I've got 4 GB RAM on a brand-new MacPro. As soon as I fire up Mail, it consumes all of the available memory and the system grinds to a halt. I see minimal CPU activity, but the machine is sluggish as molasses.

How long have you left it ?
