I'm a newbie to OS X Server. I think its great, but a steep learning
curve for someone trying to build a home network that MAY also serve
the needs of a number of our small businesses.
This exchange has the potential for me to say "just forget it" and to
go elsewhere for fear of being treated like an idiot.
I've been working in the IT Industry since before MS-DOS 1.0. I
called Gary Kildall at IDRI a friend, once had Bill Gates throw a
bread roll at me at a 1-on-1 lunch when he was trying to win back the
affections of the company I was working for, and I asked him why we
should trust him again.
And I ask the same question of a few of the senior contributors to
this forum: Why should I now trust you to not treat me as an idiot?
Cheers

I'm sorry to see you go. I've seriously considered unsubscribing

It would be prudent of list members who post frequently to consider
their tone and attitude when responding to very reasonable questions
such as Chad's, less more harm than good come of their participation
on this mailing list.
Partially right. Considering the continual stream of questions
without
enough information to answer without the standard game of "20
questions", I
can see where it gets annoying after a while.
I guarantee, guaran-damned-tee that everyone griping about Dan's
pedanticism
here has had the same thoughts when a user calls/emails/whatever
with "The
internet's broken, fix it" or "I can't print, fix it"...the thought
is a
variance on this: "Can you give me some USEFUL friggin' information
here, or
am I going to have to dig it out of your skull yet AGAIN?" You
probably
don't SAY it of course, but it's what you're thinking as you take
that deep
breath and say "Okay, well, I'm going to need to ask you a couple
questions
here..."
From them, sure. But no, I don't think it's too much to expect
that someone
"in the biz" do things like provide details. If they don't, and
someone
tells them to, then for crying out loud, set aside your ego and
your hurt
feelings, and provide the details. Even better, learn from it, and
next
time, write a friggin' book on the problem.
The OP question, as written, had some critical details left out.
Exactly how
hard is everyone ELSE supposed to work to fish said details out of
the OP's
head and into electrons?
If you think someone is being an idiot, it's not your responsibility
on a list like this to take them down a peg. It's neither helpful
nor very nice.
Whether or not someone who is experienced is sick of answering the
standard "20 questions" the fact of the matter is the question IS
new to the poster if not to the well versed people who answer here.
It's vital that experienced people keep that in mind and if you
think someone is being a dork, is uninformed, should go look at
Google more carefully or whatever, you have an option: simply don't
reply.
I've said this before on this list and I'll say it again. I find it
sad when people have a know it all attitude (lord knows I've been
accused by users of having it myself, so it's a familiar refrain)
and use it to make others feel small or stupid.
I say to the snarky people....stop being snarky and try to be
helpful or be quiet. If someone is being a dunderhead, let them know
politely off list. Often it's simply from lack of sleep or being so
sick of thinking about a problem that you inadvertently leave
something important out. The last thing anyone needs when they are
stressed and trying to solve a problem is to have someone throw 100
lbs of grade A snark their way. It's just plain old rude and doesn't
help anyone except the snarky one to feel bigger.
