Re: User Web Pages on another server

I think the issue is that he wants user files on the file server, and user web documents on the web server, but everything transparent (i.e., users log into one server, still have all files but the "Sites" directory physically on the "file server", and have the contents of the web directory physically on the web server, but transparently presented to the user via their login to the file server).

So it's not just a matter of NFS exporting all of /Users. It's going to involve somehow hooking up just the web directory to destinations on the web server...which can be done a variety of ways.

You're going to want to automount the User directory via NFS I'd imagine. Also set it up as an OD slave so it has the user information. This is assuming you want a user's ~/Site folder to show up as yourdomain.com/~user, if you're setting each user up with their own domain or sub-domain all you'll need to do is set up an NFS share for each user's ~/Site folder and then automount them.

Yes, it will be running 10.5.x

Other than those services (and Open Directory) it will be running no other services, nor will in any way be modified.

Will the web server be running Mac OS X?

I apologize if this question is easy, but I can't seem to find a way to do this.

How can I have on server handle the file services, and host all the files for users, and have another server run the web service, and still allow for user webpages to be used?

I realize I can redirect web users to another server, but I'd rather not rely on redirects, but if need be I can do this.

Is there any seamless (for the user) way to do this?

Thanks,
Robert Everson
