Authentication from an Existing LDAP with OD Master

I'm fairly new at the open directory setup. My university has a read only LDAP directory which can provide user authentication.

I've setup my server as an Open Directory Master and had my clients successfully bind to the server and then able to login with accounts created within the open directory account. Within the Directory Utility i've successfully mapped the external ldap directory and able to authenticate into my server using my directory account. But I would like my clients to connect only to the open directory and not to the university ldap connection and still provide authentication off the external ldap directory. Is it possible for me to link the contacts from the external ldap into my open directory so that i can setup an home directory for them and any other preferences needed. If needed i can connect the clients to the external ldap server. But i still would like to have the account linked so that i can manage user preference and account privileges.

Is it possible to link my external ldap accounts into my open directory master, or am i approaching this problem from the wrong direction?

Thanks,
