10.5 DNS requires base domain A record?
I have been getting conflicting info from various sources on this
question.
I have set up a domain using Server Admin. The domain is in the
format: example.com
The machine, which is supposed to run its own DNS (after completing
the install and DNS config.) is: mail.example.com.
mail.example.com is the only A record I was told to use by
Enterprise Support. The idea was that the base domain would then
also work. However, I have seen a lot of odd behavior. After the
latest update, I can't resolve the base domain, example.com, only
the machine name, mail.example.com.
Can anyone who has configured 10.5 DNS tell me whether they have
succeeded with this?
Or is Support simply confused?
I was just fiddling with that yesterday. Basically I wanted
example.com to be mail-only; that is, its only function was to be the
base domain in email. So I set up A records pointing to my mail host
both for example.com and host.example.com, and set up example.com as
the mail server for the domain via an MX record, and definitely things
became squirrelly.
What made things get strange was that when both domains pointed to the
machine's main IP, after reboots it would sometimes think its name was
example.com, and sometimes that it was host.example.com. Not good.
So I changed the IP of example.com to an unused address. That is, it
was still considered a Machine in the Server admin's DNS setup, but
there was not (and never will be) an actual machine that would respond
to that IP. I set host.example.com as the mail server for the entire
example.com domain. And of course I set up Mail to accept mail from
example.com as well as from host.example.com.
Probably there are other more intelligent ways of doing this, but so
far, the above approach seems to work OK. I can use either email@hidden
OR email@hidden for email.
