You must have perfectly working DNS on another server on your local
network to install Leopard successfully otherwise you're hosed. Do you?

Apologies in advance if I'm missing something simple...I've been
struggling with this for days now and just need to get it done.
Trying to help a friend get Leopard Server installed at the school
he works for. Currently they're running 10.4.11 for light email,
web, AFP, FTP (using Rumpus), and DNS. The server is on a fixed IP
address on the LAN (say 10.0.0.1) with the server's LAN IP set as
the primary DNS server as distributed through the router's DHCP.
External clients are routed through a static WAN IP to the server
via DMZ (not the ideal setup, and one that I'm working with him to
change as part of the transition). Everything resolves correctly
with the current setup.
They want to move their server to a new machine (PPC to Intel) and,
in the process, upgrade to Leopard Server. I'm fine with migrating
everything once Leopard is installed and configured, but a fresh
install on the new machine hangs at the last little bit of the
"...Your server is being configured..." screen. I've scoured the
support pages on Apple's site and found a post with the exact same
issue, but the only real response is that it's most likely a problem
with DNS without any suggestions on how to fix it. I've tried
installing/configuring on and off the network, on a smaller subnet
not connected to the larger network, manually setting the IP address
in the configuration screen as well as manual with DHCP, and still
the same issue every time (I've even tried installing on a different
machine with the same results).
I didn't have this issue when I transitioned my school, but I also
can't see any major differences either in setup or in procedure.
I'm not an advanced administrator, but I'm not a newbie
either...what is the simple thing I'm overlooking here?
