Re: Leopard Server OD Master and AFP

I'm running an OD master and AFP server on the same box and my experience has been that OD runs fine but AFP doesn't. It requires restarts every few minutes (as you note below) otherwise client logins fail with a vague error message - authentication seems to work fine but it's the AFP mount of home directories that fails. To know the root cause of the problem I've given up on - error logging is so useless I wonder why bother spend the cycles to log anything at all.

But, since the 10.5.3 upgrade of MacOS Server and all clients, I so far haven't needed to restart AFP. But it's too soon to put any conviction into that statement.

If it's not too late, I would highly discourage running MacOS X server in a production environment - it is NOT ready for prime time by any stretch of the imagination. Maybe Apple's paid support is so good that all these problems are easily overcome for those who have support contracts but if that were the case, I would expect to see a lot of that info filtering into the community support venues - something that I personally don't see happening fast enough for people to address severe problems in a timely manner.

I am hearing rumblings (from a local tech coordinator and an apple discussion group) of Leopard Server not liking a machine to be and OD Master and AFP sharepoint server. Any truth to this or known issues? And/or workarounds?

I will be helping a district tech coordinator setup a couple of Leopard Servers tomorrow and she is reporting problems with a Leopard server she setup a few months ago. She has a script that she received from her Apple SE that stops and restarts AFP services every few minutes. She states that if this script is not run the directory services crashes and then no new users can connect to AFP shares until the server is rebooted.

I haven't had a look at the script and hope to avoid this problem by starting with all fresh installs and import of users. Unless there is a known bug and this problem will present itself regardless of what I do.

All feedback appreciated.
