Just playing with mobile accounts with 10.5.3 server and client, and trying to get them to use an external volume to store the home folder.
My steps have been:
Create account in OD
Change mobility options, account creation to always, create home with syncing off, create mobile account when user logs into network account.
Under options, i've tried both "user chooses external volume, any volume" and forcing a path.
Then at login window i've tried having the external drive connected from restart, from logout of a past session that had mounted it, and plugging it in at the login window prompt, all with the same result of not being able to choose the drive. (if external only is enabled, no drive option is given).
With a forced path, to /Volumes/AirStream, it actually creates the /Volumes/AirStream folder and mounts the disk called AirStream as "AirStream 1," which leads me to the conclusion that the disk is not actually mounted or loginwindow does not see the disk at all.
ssh'ed into the workstation with it at the loginwindow, the external drive isn't mounted.
Testing with the forced path, I was able to mount the volume via ssh, and when the account logged in, it was properly created on the external drive and worked when the volume disk was insert. It still did not populate the options list for the user that was set as "select any volume."
Also, with the machine unbound from the network, and the mobile account deleted from the accounts window, the machine wont let me log into the mobile account on the drive (I would expect I should be able to do, if I were to bring this drive to another, unbound computer).
I tried setting the mcx in both user records and the computer record, neither working.
What magic were the guys at WWDC doing that I missed?
