DiskWarrior is NOT a data recovery tool. It will make changes to directories
that cause files to disappear. It will certainly warn you if it thinks this
might happen, but it does not always know.

Never ever run DiskWarrior on a drive where you cannot afford to lose data.
Use something like Data Rescue first. In fact, once you know you have
directory damage, it's a good idea to unmount the volume and only let tools
like Data Rescue have a crack at it. It's critical to not have any further
writes to the damaged directory.

As you've found, ditto and other normal tools cannot cope with I/O errors.
