Well its almost certain this isnt the right place for this, but Im
three months in to 10.5 server too and my three thousand quids worth
of Intel Xserve cant yet replace my 8 year old Cobalt Raq 550r - which
is just a web administered click and go simple multiple virtual hosts
and email and mailman device.
Perhaps you noticed the went out of business? Wonder why?
Because of a rotten takeover by Sun. Sun killed them for their own
misguided political agenda.
I cant make it work properly in terms of multiple dns, multiple mail
accounts to same shortname, virtual web hosts, inability (to me) to
set up apache reverse proxy, wiki group 404 issues, email problems,
mailman,
So this is your problem, not the product's.
Yes it is, but if its mine, then its other folks as well. Id like to
make it work and the Apple spirit is to encourage and foster that
learning isnt it.. So my problems are better shared as experiences for
us all.
lack of IE browser compatibility in wiki/blog.
As if IE works?
Your point is? I hate IE but most of my web site hits come from it and
like King Canute I just cant stop that from happening no matter how much
I command it.
10.5 seems to me to have a very broken network client too.
THE network client? Yeah, there's just one thing that connects to all
things network.
I detect some smug perception of uber tech knowledge. I qualified to say
copying to Windows servers.. I couldn't care less how many pieces of
technology are underneath it if they are broken. Call me old fashioned
but broken is broken.
Perhaps its just me
Ya think?
Im offering an opportunity to say to this community that I dont know
everything. Im also posting here in the full knowledge that people like
you will reply in quite a disdainful way. Well so be it but Im a
customer too, and presumably Apple would like more widespread adoption
of OS X server. If they do then they need to hear voices like mine. If
they dont then they only need to hear from you of course. They should
also put on the box 'please dont buy this software unless youre
qualification has been endorsed by the OS X Server guru club or you
won't be worthy'
but I used to in 10.4 be able to copy things to a windows server
Like I can under Leopard?
Im glad you can. I cant. Does that make you better?
My questions for the most part are being asked by many others here and
in the discussions. Ive filed several as bugs.
Must be a bug if you can't make it work, right?
I refer you to everything that Apple stands for. Emphatically Yes. If I
cant make it work its a bug. Apple can reject it if they like but its a
bug to me and thats up to me.
I suppose the root of my problem is the incomprehensibility of whats
'supposed' to work.>
:incredulous look:
Youre thrilled with the quality of the 10.5 server doc? Wow. Does the
term 'rush job' resonate in the USA.
My experience (20 years of Solaris Mac/NeXT, Windows and Linux) might
be a barrier
Probably.
Mac OS X Leopard != Solaris != Linux != ...
So to you the only experience that could be germains is of 10.5 Leopard
Server, which dear reader is exactly what I am trying to gain.
but Im trying to unlearn and do things the 10.5 way, but with no
worked examples in the provided doc it is a pain.
Right, docs are supposed to be a cookbook. Someone forgot to hire Emeril.
Whos Emeril? If its an american cultural reference you should know that
these are not things that translate beyond a very narrow demographic.
Worked examples have been very ordinary since 'Doing more with SunOS'
was part of their doc set.
I even bought 'Mac OS X Server Essentials 2nd Edition for 10.5 - a
very expensive book
It lists for under $60, that's expensive? I spend more on dinner in a
night.
Im glad, your dinner habits arent in question. I live in the UK. Its
42.99 (80plus USD) which in my world is extortionate.
which is 'Apple Certified'
The book? LOL
Yes the book. 'Apple Certified' 'Apple Training Series'
, to help me but on inspection its written for children.
As in "essentials" that any sysadmin is already supposed to know? Hence
"essentials"???
By your logic therefore you dont need a book at all. Should we all
magially be giben the gift of sysadmin for Mac OS X Server. Ive been
running Windows, Linux, Unix systems for years. Im not a full time pro
admin for sure, but Ive never been in as much trouble as with Leopard
Server.
2 pages on mailman for example which just boil down to saying 'click
this and press ok'. I couldnt recommend it at all.
Probably b/c mailman has fairly extensive docs already that you should
have read.
Nothing at all on mailmans site about integration with Leopard Server
Groups and Wikis and Blogs and User accounts. Guess what - thats Apples
responsibility as integrator.
I fully accept I need to spend more time on making it work, but Im
losing confidence in 10.5 server, and dont have a lot of time to spend
learning how to work in a command line without breaking stuff that
should just work from a gui.
Then perhaps you should consider a job change to something much easier
with shorter learning curves.
So, Dan youre saying that Mac OS X Server is only for those who are
worthy? That doesnt sound like the Apple way to me.
Like the OP said... What else can I do to help?
RTFMs for the FOSS components? Read the OS X Internals book?
What is FOSS
What OS X internals Book. Why do I need to know about internals to admin
a server?
I want 10.6 to be insanely great. But this, this is like System 7s
dark days...
Right, System 7 did much more out of the box than Leopard :chuckle:
IMHO it was just as broken. It was slow buggy and a huge jump from
System 6. Sounds familiar to me...
For anyone still listening I would like to say that it is my right to
lose confidence if I cant get it to work. I dont need an uber admin
bully telling me to get a different job to reinforce it. And Apple -
neither do you - get back to making Leopard Server great as fast as
possible please before people like me give up.
