It is no such thing. Mac OS X has always required good DNS running, either on that server, or externally.

If you want to carry out a conversation, you have to read what the other person says, before making a reply. I said, "needs a DNS, and a good one, *already running*". If you read my earlier posts, and followed the links, you would see that this is a widespread problem. The documentation is not clear on this point, that the DNS can't be fixed after the install, except the Expert Install.

Yes. And all that stuff about "setting up the DNS name of the machine" tells
me that you need DNS to do that with. You also need a functional network to
connect the machine to.

The docs don't tell you that you need a network. That the network has to be
functional. They don't tell you that you need AC power either. What else
don't they tell you?

What you want is not documentation but, literally, a step by step howto that
includes every possible situation that could arise and every configuration.
You want an endless series of dialog boxes with movies that say "This is an
ethernet cable. It goes in the hole that looks like this on a mini, this on
a Mac Pro, this on a G5 tower...."

Oh, then it should explain ethernet I suppose, so that no prior knowledge of
that is needed.

What you want is something that technology, right now, cannot do. You, with
your mighty IEEE articles *should* know this. Evidently, you do not.

Apple has not promised magic, they have promised easier. The fact that you,
or others read "Easier" and think "magic" is not within their ability to
control.

You will not get another reply from me, if you disregard the facts stated. That seems to be a habit for you and certain others here, and I will not encourage it.

Oh, you not replying would be a trajedi, at least until you stop acting like
Apple promised you Hogwarts Server 10.5

Well actually this is possible.... you just need a chip implanted in your brain that talks to your server and then you can have the server do whatever you can dream of... Of course, the chip will cost you more than a billion hours of tech consulting....

Seriously, ever tried doing all this on a Windoze server? You should be glad with the level of simplification that Apple offers... You really want to decide on what directory your registry should dump all the crap into and what service pack you should and should not install...
