Re: 10.5 Server sucks, 10.5 sucks

... Apple has, like every other vendor,
a LONG list of "Things That Suck".

Amen. I wonder how many of these folks have explored the MS or IBM support DBs?

A friend of mine is a senior person at IBM. They held off on ANY 10.5.0 installs because there was a problem that Apple purposely held off till .1 . He was ok with that. He understands the lists of "to do"s are infinite and the resources to do them are finite. (And yes there are a lot of Macs inside of IBM these days. They are getting to be very platform agnostic on all but the places where big iron is needed.)

Also, I do remember the simplicity of Apple's pre OS X Server -
something that was very easy to use (deploy) yet limited to that old
crashy OS we knew and loved/tolerated.

Having archived far too much mail from the ASIP list, there were just as many complaints about how hard it was to do things, how Apple was lying, etc. ASIP was indeed easy to deply, *if you knew what you were doing*. If you did not, you could, and many people constantly did, screw it right into the ground. ESPECIALLY where Mac Manager was concerned.

Apple can do this. It's not magic, it's good design.

Making it easier and better is always a goal. Making it so that you have to do no work whatsoever, nor know anything about your network to set up a server is magic.

This reminds me of the fellow a while back who was over the top because EVERY possible option was not implemented in the GUI. He just KNEW it was possible and negligent on Apple's part for not doing it before it shipped a version. Those of us in the know tried to tell him that a product spec'd like that would never ship. Then we just ignored him.
