I can't really offer any help on your issue, but why not use mailman for mass e-mailing. That's what it lives for and the fact that you're doing an end-run around it is making it sad.

Actually, I do have one suggestion for your problem after re-reading your error. Did you by chance create an actual user for your other groups and not for this one?
