I get strange behavior of Mac OS Server 10.5.2 when setting the File
Locking for SMB shares.
In the manual it says "Strict locking, enabled by default...",
however in the settings panel of Server Admin the Strikt Locking
checkbox is unchecked. If I check it and hit Save it is unchecked
the next time I open the settings panel. As far as I understand the
locking stuff, it should not be checkboxes but radio buttons anyway,
because locking is either Strikt or Opportunistic. Am I missing
something here?
My reading of the manual and various web sites is that these are two
different concepts. Strict locking requires a file (or part of a
file) to be released by one machine before another machine can access
it. Opportunistic locking is a performance enhancement which allows a
machine to cache its modifications to a file.
Both require *all* the machines accessing a file to support the type
of locking being used.
The unfortunate aspect is that both are implemented only in Windows
operating systems, and on Server, only for machines accessing the
share point using SMB. Hence, any Mac accessing a file using AFP or
SMB will not know about the locking and may modify the contents of
the file without warning.
According to the manual, strickt locking is enabled by default. When
I check the shares in terminal using "sharing -l" I find that strikt
locking does not get enabled no matter what I do in Server Admin. Do
we have a problem with Server Admin? Anyone experiencing similar
problems?
Yes, I have seen this on 10.5.2 Server too. Both flags get cleared after Save.
Cheers
David
